Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt knows there is a lot of uncertainty heading into the 2020 NFL season, something that he isn't fond of. Watt said the players have no inside information on how or when the season will take place, and for the most part they only know what is being revealed publicly.
Watt said even though there is some uncertainty he is training like there is going to be a season, and that it will start on time. He said to TMZ Sports,
I don't know what's going to happen … I'm just like everybody else. We're all kind of just waiting and seeing …
“The uncertainty is the worst part of it all. We don't know what's going to happen. But, I'm training like it's gonna happen on time. And, I'm looking forward to playing — fans, no fans — whatever it is. I'm just looking forward to competing and just doing what we do.”
As important as football is to him, his fellow players and fans, Watt wants to make sure that everyone is safe if they are going to go forward with the season. Watt is aware that there are many coaches who are older and who are at higher risk of having serious complications if they are infected with COVID-19. That might be one of the biggest concerns when it comes to getting back onto the field.
While there is a great deal of concern regarding the health and safety of the players, the coaches are also a key part of the equation. It could be possible that coaches will be less hands-on during training camp and the upcoming season and that some don't feel comfortable with taking the risk of being potentially exposed to the virus. There are many questions that have yet to be answered about what a 2020 NFL season will look like, and Watt clearly has them on his mind.
