Since being cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the offseason, veteran safety Mike Mitchell has been floating around in the free agent market on through the first few weeks of the 2018 campaign.

It now appears that Mitchell has finally landed on his feet after inking a deal to join the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday morning, according to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network.

The addition of Mitchell brings some much-needed stability to the secondary for the Colts after being lit up by the New England Patriots last Thursday night in a 38-24 loss that saw quarterback Tom Brady have his way against them. Indianapolis possesses one of the least effective defenses against the pass this season ranking 28th overall while giving up the third-highest completion rate (72.1) and 283 passing yards per contest.

Mitchell has proven himself to be a dependable option in the secondary throughout his career, especially during his five years with the Steelers as one of their longtime starters with the franchise.  He has an opportunity in front of him to become a key part of their secondary while being one a veteran presence for that unit of the defense. During his tenure with the Steelers, he notched 203 tackles, four fumble recoveries, and four interceptions in 61 games played. He could be in line to make an equally impactful role with the Colts, who have stumbled a bit out of the gate to the 2018 season dropping four out of their first five games played.

This has put them two games behind the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South division standings heading into Week 6 action against the New York Jets. Mitchell could be in line to be on the field for Sunday's tilt, which would likely be on a limited basis as he gets practice time in along with digesting the new playbook.
