If you thought the week of reports regarding Vontae Davis happened to be weird, it just got much stranger, as the Indianapolis Colts have announced that the defensive back has been released from the team.
For some context on the weird week that was:
Last weekend, Vontae Davis wasn't with the team. The Colts said it wasn't injury related, while two reporters claimed that it was. Then, because of course, a third reporter emerged that backed Indy's account.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Davis was not left behind for disciplinary reasons, and said he could be missing the game because of the groin.
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that Davis missed the game because of a groin injury that kept him out the first three games of the regular season.
That's the two that didn't side with Indy's version of the story.
Article Continues BelowStar Colts beat reporter Stephen Holder reported that the coaching staff wanted to start Pierre Desir at cornerback, and that the team still maintains that Davis is not injured.
Nevertheless, Vontae Davis will now go on waivers, where any team can claim him.
It is obviously worth noting, that if the reports that he needs season-ending groin surgery are true, that may make teams decide there’s no reason to claim him.
Even if he is out for the rest of the season, Davis is still a talented player on the defensive side of the football. Unless he has a dramatic drop in athleticism falling a presumed surgery, he will have value on the market when the offseason hits.
