Ever since the Los Angeles Chargers revealed that they would not be bringing back Philip Rivers, the Indianapolis Colts have been considered the most likely landing spot for the veteran quarterback.
However, Matthew Berry of ESPN says that may not end up happening.
Berry notes that one Colts insider told him that if Indianapolis signed Rivers, it “would go against everything general manager Chris Ballard has done the entire time he's been in Indy.”
The same insider says that the more likely scenario is that the Colts will sign a veteran to compete with Jacoby Brissett for the starting job in order to give Brissett another year to prove himself.
Brissett was thrust into the starting role with just two weeks remaining before the 2019 regular season after Andrew Luck announced his sudden retirement.
He got off to a terrific start, leading Indianapolis to a 5-2 record over its first seven games and even representing a fringe MVP candidate early on, but Brissett fell off during the second half of the season.
On the year overall, the 27-year-old threw for 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 60.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 88.
That being said, it should be noted that Indy's offense was ravaged by injuries during the second half of the season, and Brissett himself even missed a game due to a sprained MCL.
Taking that into consideration, you can see why the Colts would want to give Brissett another opportunity.
Indianapolis went 7-9 this past season.
