On Sunday, the Indianapolis Colts formally submitted a proposal asking the NFL to change their overtime rules. The change would require that both teams have at least one possession. If adopted, the rule change would include both regular and postseason, according to NFL reporter Judy Battista.

The NFL overtime rule had already been a point of contention for many years. In 2010, the NFL adopted the current version of the rule. Currently, if the team that wins the coin toss scores an opening-drive touchdown, the game is over. However, if they kick a field goal or do not score, the opposing team will also possess the ball. This was considered an improvement on the existing rule prior which was sudden death; first team to score wins.

However, after the Buffalo Bills were denied a possession in their overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs this January, the conversation took on a new tone. People from the world of sports and beyond criticized the NFL rule that did not allow the Bills an offensive possession. Buffalo's offense looked as unstoppable as Kansas City's did.

Battista noted that it is not known exactly how much support there is for this new rule change. It would require 24 of the 32 teams to vote ‘yes' for the change to be enacted.
