It has been nearly a week since the New York Jets made the decision to part ways with offensive coordinator John Morton after just one season.
With that in mind, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Jets are planning on promoting quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates to the open vacancy in the coming days.

Bates will mark the sixth different offensive coordinator that the Jets have had in the last eight seasons, including the third different one under head coach Todd Bowles in four years.
New York struggled offensively this past season finishing ranked 28th in overall offense, 24th in passing, and 19th in rushing. They were also 24th with a 35.5 percent third-down conversion rate and 29th with just 269 first downs all season.
Article Continues BelowBates has previous experience in the offensive coordinator position as he held that spot with the Denver Broncos in the 2008 season and the Seattle Seahawks in 2010. He had just finished his first season as the quarterbacks coach in New York.
Quarterback Josh McCown did surprisingly well for the Jets despite being 38 years old, but he didn't exactly bring to the table the consistent production that the team could rely on to head on the right path to success. They still need to find the team's franchise quarterback either through the 2018 NFL Draft or in free agency.
Meanwhile, the same could be said about the running game with Matt Forte no longer playing at a Pro Bowl level as injuries have begun to catch up with him. He has brought a strong veteran presence, but the need for a reliable every-down tailback is also high up on the list.
That said, wide receivers Robby Anderson and Jermaine Kearse certainly showed promise that they could be a duo in the passing game that the team can build around for the next several years.
