Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach would not guarantee a contract extension for Patrick Mahomes in the near future, but he did say Mahomes “isn't going anywhere.”

Veach said the Chiefs are intent on negotiating a new contract with their star quarterback, though he also said it is possible the team will use the fifth-year option to buy themselves more time (via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk):

“I can never sit here and speak in definitive, so I can’t say that the fifth-year won’t be an option or anything like that,” Veach said, via the Kansas City Star. “It would be hard for me to say that we’d have to use that. If we feel that it’s a priority when you have a great player, and that great player is a priority, to things get done. It’s just hard to put a timetable on exactly when and how that will all work out. But we know and I’m sure he knows that it will get done and it will be taken care of.”

The Chiefs have until May 30 to exercise the fifth-year option, which seems increasingly likely given they are currently focused on extending star defensive tackle Chris Jones.

Mahomes has lived up to the billing as a generational talent at the quarterback position.

The 2018 NFL MVP missed a couple of games due to injury, but he still threw for over 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns before leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory.

Naturally, the Chiefs are unlikely to allow Mahomes to ever get to free agency. Still, they are weighing all their options and will not make a hasty decision on this matter.
