The Kansas City Chiefs shocked the NFL world when they traded superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. This leaves Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes without one of his top targets moving forward, and everybody is wondering how this will impact Kansas City's high-powered offense.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he doesn't think losing Hill will change his strategy all that much, and Mahomes was able to find a silver lining in the trade. While losing Hill was indeed a shock, Mahomes thinks the offense could become a bit “more diverse” in 2022:
Patrick Mahomes said the the #chiefs offense will be about spreading the football around in 2022. He said that now defenses won’t know where the ball is going or who it’s going to. It’s going to be “more diverse” in his mind.

Now, Mahomes is obviously just doing his best to make the best of this trade. He can say whatever he wants, but losing Hill's big-play ability is going to take some getting used to and will likely hurt a bit in the short term. After all, he had 111 catches for 1,239 catches and nine touchdown receptions in 2021 and consistently put up massive numbers in Kansas City. He went over 1,000 yards in four out of six seasons with the Chiefs and had two seasons with double-digit touchdowns.
But perhaps Kansas City will ultimately be able to build a “more diverse” offense in the coming seasons. The Chiefs still have Travis Kelce and just brought in JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling at wide receiver, giving Mahomes some bigger targets to throw at. If they can add some young talent at wideout, they will really be in business.
Kansas City should still be dangerous with Mahomes under center, even without Hill, but it will be interesting to see how this offense operates without the speedy wideout.
