Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes came into Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins having thrown just two interceptions all year.
The 2018 NFL MVP proceeded to eclipse his season total in one game.
Mahomes threw three interceptions against the Dolphins, making it just the second three-interception game of his career.
But the superstar signal-caller said after the game he is hardly ever fazed by interceptions, and those mistakes do not alter his aggressiveness throwing the football:
“I’ve always been someone if I throw an interception it’s not going to change my mentality,” Mahomes said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “I’m going to continue to fire, I’m going to continue to shoot the ball downfield, let my guys try to make plays. Whenever you start being timid after you throw an interception that’s how you lose games.”
Mahomes was picked off on the team's first drive of the game after a pass intended for Travis Kelce was tipped. He was intercepted a second time at the end of the first quarter, and the Chiefs trailed the Dolphins 10-0 after a Miami field goal.
But Mahomes and the rest of Kansas City's offense would kick into high gear. The Chiefs rattled off 30 unanswered points to take a commanding lead. Miami fought back valiantly in the fourth quarter, but it simply was not enough.
The Chiefs improved to 12-1 on the season, and also jumped the Pittsburgh Steelers for the top seed in the AFC.
Even when Mahomes and Co. look vulnerable, their ability to put up points in bunches is unparalleled. Chalk it up to the mindset.
