At this point, Patrick Mahomes is widely regarded as the best player in football, and rightfully so.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is just three seasons into his NFL career and already has an MVP award and a Super Bowl ring to his name. For that reason, the Chiefs need to do everything in their power to ensure he sticks around for the long haul.
The thing is, Mahomes has just two years remaining on his deal. And it would certainly behoove Kansas City to hammer out a new contract with the 24-year-old sometime in the near future.
Mahomes was asked about a potential new deal this week:
Article Continues Below“I want to be a Chief for a long time and have a contract that says that,” said Mahomes, according to James Palmer of NFL Network.
The gunslinger added that he trusts the Chiefs and his reps in taking care of it and that he is focusing on himself as a player.
Given the price of quarterbacks in today's game, Mahomes seems likely to break the bank. But some have suggested that the superstar could take a pay cut in order to free up money for Kansas City to spend on the rest of the roster.
Mahomes is coming off of a 2019 campaign in which he missed a couple of games due to a dislocated knee cap. When he was on the field, he was brilliant. The former MVP threw for 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 65.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 105.3 en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.
Most importantly, the Texas Tech product led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl title since the NFL-AFL merger.
