Things are good for the Kansas City Chiefs. They are in the Super Bowl, they are as popular as ever, and they have a franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes.
Even better: Mahomes doesn't want to leave Kansas City. The 2018 MVP and Texas native is enjoying life in Missouri, and it doesn't hurt that the team he plays with isn't too shabby.
“The people are what really drew me to Kansas City, and I hope I get to play there the rest of my career,” Mahomes said during Super Bowl media availability, via Pro Football Talk. “The people and how they accept you, how they care about you more as a person than as a player, how much passion they have for the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s somewhere where I want to be for the rest of my career.”
If Mahomes wants to stay in Kansas City, he will. The Chiefs will extend their franchise quarterback. The real questions are when and how much will he be paid.
A 2017 first-round pick, Mahomes has two years left on his rookie contract if the Chiefs pick up his fifth-year option for 2021. Expect Kansas City to use the next year to hammer out a contract with the young game-changer. That contract will likely contain record-breaking figures.
Mahomes did not repeat as MVP in 2019, but he did enjoy another successful campaign in his second year as an NFL starter. In 14 games, he passed for 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns, and five interceptions on a 65.9% completion rate. Most importantly, he has the Chiefs back in the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years.
