Right before the current NFL season kicked off, among the hottest stocks in the hobby were Patrick Mahomes cards. Rightfully so because the Kansas City Chiefs' star quarterback has done more in his five-year career than almost every other player in the NFL right now, leading a lot of hobbyists to collect his cards. But after almost two months of football action, his stock is steadily declining, bewildering every collector out there right now.
We take a look below at Patrick Mahomes' stock in the card market and the reason why they're trending downward.
The Reasons Why Patrick Mahomes Cards Are Slumping
As it stands, the Chiefs are dead last in the American Football Conference West with a 3-4 record. While the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars possess much poorer records, the results for this Mahomes-led squad have been disappointing, to say the least. Turns out, there are several reasons why this is happening.
For starters, opposing teams have studied how Chiefs run their plays and learned how to defend against them. As a result, around 3.2% of Mahomes' passes have been intercepted, as opposed to 1.4% during his first three seasons. This prevents Kansas City's quarterback from throwing the ball deep down into the field and having an easy man-to-man throw in the process.
With those long throws out of the equation, the Chiefs are forced to run short completions, much to their detriment. By forcing those 30 to 40 yard completions, opposing teams get more chances to intercept Mahomes' plays and turn the tide in their favor. They're basically forcing the Chiefs' QB to run with the football and make a short throw. This is where it gets ugly for Kansas City.

Looking at the numbers, the Chiefs average 5 yards per carry, a clear sign of Head Coach Andy Reid's history of quickly abandoning the run. This works against the team, especially their Top Back Clyde Edwards-Helaire injuring his knee, which leads them to rely more on run-pass plays. As a result, Mahomes' footwork within the pocket has been affected.
With all of these factors coming together, the result is a regression on the part of Mahomes and the Chiefs. Now that their opponents have adapted to their style of play, it's now up to them to do the same. Thankfully, a talented quarterback like Mahomes has all the skills and tools to do just that. Although it's true that Kansas City's performance on the field leaves much to be desired, they still have time to fix their issues and run like a well-oiled machine before the year ends. If that happens, Mahomes' stock in the card market would have a chance for redemption before the current NFL season ends.
The Current State of Mahomes' Rookie Cards
As mentioned earlier, Mahomes card value was among the hottest during the offseason. This hype was driven by the hope that the QB can make another leap and lead Kansas City back to the Super Bowl. During that time, towards the end of August, his PSA 10 Prizm Silver rookie card reflected that sentiment by attaining a value of $10,000 on the market.
Almost two months after, that price has gone down. Thanks to a slumping performance, PSA 10 slabs of Mahomes' definitive rookie card have gone down to $7,100. That's around $2,900 worth of loss to any collector who purchased these Patrick Mahomes cards a few months ago.
While this drop in value is a concern, one must remember that there's every chance Mahomes can rebound sooner than later. If that happens, those who entered his stock while they're dropping can see themselves make a healthy profit down the line. In any case, it helps to monitor the star QB's performance, both on the field and in the card market.
