Jadeveon Clowney has been seeking to become one of the highest-paid defensive players in free agency; apparently the Miami Dolphins were prepared to sign him. However, at the beginning of free agency, Clowney declined a contract offer from Miami.
The fact that Clowney turned down an offer from the Dolphins shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Last offseason, Miami made an advance on Clowney, after the Houston Texans placed the franchise tag on him.
As a matter of fact, the Dolphins actually brought the former No. 1 pick in for a visit to discuss their plans for him if he were to join the roster. But instead of taking his talents to South Beach, Clowney signed his tag and made his way to the Seattle Seahawks.
After spending a season with the Seahawks, Clowney was longing to get a long-term deal that paid him an excess of $20 million annually. While he wasn't drawing much interest at that price point, the Dolphins offered him a deal for around $17 million annually.
However, just as he did last offseason, Clowney turned away the Dolphins. As a result, Miami chose to sign Shaq Lawson instead and was able to pay him $7 million less than they would have with Clowney.
On the other hand, Clowney remains in free agency and is still holding out hope that a team reaches out to him with a lucrative deal. After the latest fiasco, It's safe to say that the ship has sailed for Clowney to join the Dolphins.
