Adam Thielen isn't the only one pushing for a re-negotiated contract that would more accurately reflect his standing as one of the NFL's most productive receivers. In a series of twitter posts on Monday, ESPN analyst and former NFL defensive back Domonique Foxworth advocated for the Minnesota Vikings to finally pony up the dough for the former undrafted free agent.
“The Vikings better give Adam Thielen a new deal before the end of this week or I am going to write them a sternly worded letter, that calls into question everything I thought I knew about how the world works,” he wrote. “Thielen 2018 NFL WR rankings: Targets 6th, Receptions 3rd, RecYards 8th. His current contract average salary is 48th amongst NFL WRs. Undrafted Thielen has made a total of almost $15mil in his 5year career, which is less than Jarvis Landry's per year average. Most of this years first round picks will get more guaranteed money than is in Thielen's current contract #paythielen.”
Thielen signed a three-year, $27 million extension that includes $11 million in guarantees back in March 2017, after a breakout season in which he led the Vikings with 967 receiving yards. He's only further established himself as a star in the interim, making the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons and finishing 2018 with career-highs of 113 catches, 1,373 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns.
Minnesota, though it has every intention of retaining Thielen for the foreseeable future, currently has just $2.4 million in cap space. The team could certainly create more financial flexibility by re-structuring existing deals or waiving players whose salary doesn't match their on-field impact, but may opt to address Thielen's desire for a new contract next season considering his existing deal will keep him with the Vikings through 2020.
