The Minnesota Vikings will not exercise their fifth-year option on wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, according to the team. This means that Treadwell will be a free agent next offseason.

Treadwell is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he played 15 games and hauled in 35 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown.

The 23-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Mississippi, was originally selected by the Vikings in the first round (23rd pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He has been a huge disappointment for Minnesota.

During his rookie year, he appeared in just nine contests and logged one catch for 15 yards. His limited playing time was not due to injury, but simply due to poor performance.

Then, the following season, Treadwell participated in all 16 games, but caught only 20 passes for 200 yards.

Treadwell gained steam as an NFL prospect during his junior year at Mississippi, when he snared 82 balls for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was also solid in his freshman and sophomore seasons, as he finished with 72 catches for 608 yards and five scores during his first year with the Rebels and then totaled 48 receptions for 632 yards and five touchdowns in his second season at the school.

However, he has not come close to replicating that production on the NFL level, and while he is still young, he has shown no signs of ever becoming anything more than a low-end No. 3 or 4 receiver, at best.

The Vikings, meanwhile, went 8-7-1 this past season and missed the playoffs, one year after making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game.
