With the 2020 NFL season just a few weeks away, it seems that the New England Patriots are still figuring things out for their QB slot. This is the first year in almost two decades that head coach Bill Belichick will be without legendary playmaker Tom Brady and when asked if he already had a starter in mind, the 68-year old head coach wasn't giving anything away.
“We’ve got a very competitive competition at a very competitive position at the quarterback spot. It will be interesting to see how everybody does.” Belichick told “The Rich Eisen Show” (per NESN.com)
Filling in for the shoes of a six-time Super Bowl champion wouldn't be a walk in the park, so it does make sense that the champion head coach is being very patient with his decision.
Article Continues BelowThe Patriots brought in former NFL MVP Cam Newton this offseason and though many are expecting for him to start over the other QB options in the Patriots bench like Jarett Stidham or Brian Hoyer, it seems that the head coach is choosing to take his time.
“He’s an extremely hard-working player, first guy in, last one out type of guy,” Belichick said of Newton. “He’s really studied hard and has spent a lot of extra time trying to learn our offense, our communication, our calls, nomenclature and so forth. I’ve been very impressed with that. He’s done a good job of picking it up. He’s a very skilled athlete”
The newly acquired signal caller from the Carolina Panthers has so far impressed his coaches in his short stint so far in New England. It's going to be interesting if Belichick decides to go all-in on Newton as the Patriots enter this new chapter in their franchise.
