In wake of the New England Patriots' Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, star quarterback Tom Brady has remained quite active off the field. On Thursday, the five-time champion teamed up with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and others to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

As many Patriots and NFL fans know, Brady's mother Galynn is a cancer survivor.

Granite Telecommunications pledged $5 million to the Institute if Brady and 1,000 others agreed to shave their heads for the cause, according to the Boston Globe's Mark Shanahan. Not surprisingly, he obliged.

Over the last four years, Granite has donated $14.7 million to Dana-Farber through his annual event, and $18 million overall (a significant chunk coming today).

Given Brady's demeanor over the last month since Super Bowl LII, you'd never know his Patriots fell short of their ultimate goal. Rather than let the loss dampen his mood, he has embraced the lessons that can be learned from defeat, even bestowing them upon his son. From NESN's Darren Hartwell:

“Benny was crying, Vivi was crying and they were sad for me and sad for the Patriots,” Brady said, referring to his 8-year-old son, Benjamin, and 5-year-old daughter, Vivian. “But I just said to them, ‘Look, you guys, this is a great lesson. We don’t always win. We try our best and sometimes it doesn’t go the way we want.’”

Overall, today's event reportedly raised $6.5 million for the cause, including donations from sources other than Granite.
