The New Orleans Saints have had an interesting offseason. The Saints lost top safety Marcus Williams to free agency but were able to bring in former New York Jets safety and Kansas City Chiefs safety Daniel Sorenson as potential replacements. New Orleans missed out on superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson but was able to re-sign free agent Jameis Winston, bringing some stability to the organization. However, there's a sense that the Saints haven't gotten any better this offseason- and may have gotten a little bit worse. In a division that is pretty wide open besides the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that's unacceptable. The Saints still have work to do this offseason, with some time left to make some free agency moves. The NFL Draft is also around the corner. New Orleans is still armed with a decent amount of cap space and possesses the 18th pick in the first round of the draft. The Saints have a chance to finish the offseason strong. That said, here are two moves they must make to complete their roster.
2 Moves Saints Must Make To Complete Roster
2. Draft an offensive tackle
Losing free agent left tackle Terron Armstead to the Miami Dolphins definitely hurt the Saints this offseason. Armstead was a steady presence on the line, having earned a very solid 85.6 pass blocking grade this past season while making three Pro Bowls during his time in New Orleans. Players like that aren't easily replaced. However, this year's draft class just so happens to have some strong offensive line prospects. While most of the top lineman will likely be gone by the time the Saints' draft pick rolls around, the franchise could opt to sacrifice future draft capital to move up and select one of the top linemen. The Saints saw how capable Winston was playing behind an elite offensive line. They need to continue to make the line a priority with Winston set to return in 2022.
1. Sign a capable number-two wide receiver
The Saints could use an upgrade at the wide receiver spot. New Orleans currently has Michael Thomas, who hasn't played since 2020, as well as unproven options, such as Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris. Winston had success without the likes of Thomas this past season, though the Saints would do well to protect their investment in Winston by adding to the wide receiver room. With available free agent wideouts such as Jarvis Landry, Julio Jones and Will Fuller, there is simply no excuse for the Saints to not get better at the position this offseason. New Orleans could opt to sign someone like Jones on a one-year prove it deal, or pay a long-term deal for a younger option, such as Fuller or Landry. Fortunately, if the Saints miss on any of these free agents, the draft is loaded with wide receivers. However, New Orleans' wide receiver room is in desperate need of a proven veteran option. The Saints can make that happen with their available cap space.
