New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis says it's too early to talk about contract extension options with Teddy Bridgewater.

The Saints acquired Bridgewater and sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft for a third-round pick earlier this week. After being shipped off by the Minnesota Vikings, many viewed Bridgewater's time in New York as a tryout to become a starter for another NFL team. While he won't get to start right away, he will get to learn behind a surefire Hall of Famer in Drew Brees while serving as the primary backup quarterback in New Orleans.

“The first step is getting him here and getting to know him as a player and a person and vice versa as well. We’ll just go from there. But look in our quarterback obviously we’ve got Drew [Brees] and that’s been a pretty good thing for us for a long time but he adds to the group. We’ll see what happens,” said Loomis in an interview with Sean Fazende from FOX8 in New Orleans.

Bridgewater suffered a freak non-contact knee injury while practicing in the preseason with the Vikings in 2016, nearly causing him to have his leg amputated. He has clearly made huge strides to return to the playing field and appears to be a more trustworthy backup option than Tom Savage.

Brees is a 39-year-old Super Bowl champion that will have some tricks of the trade to share with Bridgewater. While the Saints aren't sure if they've found their heir apparent, they feel like they're taking a step in the right direction.
