Back in 2017, the Saints signed Warford to a four-year, $34 million contract after he spent four seasons with the Detroit Lions. While in New Orleans, Warford started at right guard for three consecutive seasons. In addition, over the course of his three years with the Saints, he made the Pro Bowl in each one.
The writing was one the wall for New Orleans to make a change on the offensive line during the 2020 NFL Draft. When they selected Cesar Ruiz with the No. 24 pick, Warford's status with the team was suddenly hanging in the balance.

Besides re-signing Drew Brees, the Saints chose to give Peat a five-year, $57.5 million extension. Additionally, the Saints appear to be confident in Erik McCoy and Ruiz bolstering the interior of their offensive line.
Upon his release from New Orleans, Warford is undoubtedly going to be a coveted target in free agency. Even at this point in the offseason, there are teams that could use some assurance along the offensive line. Even though the move may be surprising to some, Warford's release from the Saints should've been expected based on their other offseason machinations.
