The New Orleans Saints have been a surprisingly good team this season. There's plenty of different reasons for that. One of them, at least one of the more underrated ones, has been the play of Alvin Kamara. He's come as a shocking plus for the team. A shock to nearly everyone, but head coach Sean Payton.
Payton said that when the New Orleans' staff went to Tennessee to see Kamara, they came away from it knowing he was a player they wanted on their team.
“We felt in the draft process, after our workout up in Tennessee,” Payton said to PFT. “We had a vision for the player, certainly, after that day.”
Oddly enough, at least for those who followed Alvin Kamara, the back didn't exactly have the greatest collegiate career. It wasn't like people were projecting a wonderful career in the National Football League for him.
“The thing we didn’t know was what kind of runner he was going to be because we saw evidence of it but he was splitting carries there. When he came here and got into training camp with the pads you started seeing his foot speed and his balance. He’s really been a good addition,” Payton said.
On the season, the back has 52 carries for 311 yards. That might not seem like a ton of production at this point in the season, but Kamara is averaging 6.0 yards a carry, the best in the NFL for players with at least 50 carries. Not too shabby for a talent few had being even just a guy in the league.
