New York Jets cornerback Trumaine Johnson appears to be in hot water with the team after a costly 33-yard pass interference penalty in last Sunday's losing effort against the Green Bay Packers. The penalty ultimately led to the Packers' game-winning touchdown. Johnson has had a very disappointing season after many solid seasons with the Los Angeles Rams.
Rich Cimni of ESPN reported “Coach Todd Bowles refused to give details, calling it “an in-house matter that we're dealing with.” He declined to say whether it was related to discipline, although he made it clear it wasn't an excused absence. Johnson was likely also fined.”
When reporters asked Johnson about the matter, he said, “Me and the head man talked about it. That's between us.” Johnson reportedly headed straight for the locker room after the loss and would not speak to any reporters.
Article Continues BelowCimni spoke on the Jets' strong desire to acquire Johnson this past offseason.
“In need of a No. 1 cornerback, the Jets signed Johnson to a five-year, $72.5 million contract last offseason, including the third-largest guarantee in team history ($34 million). He leads the Jets with four interceptions even though he missed five games with a quadriceps injury, but his pass coverage has been spotty.”
Head coach Todd Bowles has stated that Johnson has had an “up and down” season, and while he has made some great plays out on the field, some regrettable ones have not been far behind. Bowles knows the caliber of player Johnson is. Unfortunately, he has not lived up to expectations that followed him from his time with Los Angeles.
