Only the big brothers were ignored. As of this moment, the New York Jets hold the No. 3 selection in next month's 2018 NFL Draft. It was acquired by picking up the phone and pulling off a massive deal that allowed them to move from No. 6 to the third slot.
According to SNY's Ralph Vacchiano, the Colts weren't the only team Mike Maccagnan spoke to. In fact, the Jets general manager also called the Cleveland Browns with interest in the No. 1 overall pick and decided against contact with the organization's big brothers, the New York Giants.
Mikey Mac pointed out, perhaps in making sure no false ill-will towards the MetLife co-tenants would be conjured up, the value at two was far different than the value at three, the spot they successfully fetched for a king's ransom.
“We feel very good about what may potentially be there at three for us with the players at all the positions we’ve evaluated,” Maccagnan said. “We feel pretty good about it. We feel it’s in a good spot. We feel a little bit that we can kind of control our own destiny a little bit. We feel pretty good about where we are. We feel it’s a good spot to be in.”
As of now, the Giants still hold the No. 2 overall pick, sandwiched right in between the Browns and Jets, two quarterback-hungry teams projected to feed that hunger on the night of April 26, 2018.
Other teams looking for franchise-altering arms are the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins who both remain options to trade up to that two hole with the Giants, a move that'll be closely followed by Maccagnan and his people.
Should the Giants stay put and draft a non-quarterback, it's likely everything works out in the Jets favor. Should they select a QB or trade down with a team after one of the top three quarterbacks, perhaps Gang Green may think twice about not picking up that phone and asking for David Gettleman.
