The New York Jets are looking to build around young quarterback Zach Wilson. After luring tight end C.J. Uzomah away from the Cincinnati Bengals with a multi-year contract, they made a move to retain their veteran backup.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Jets have signed Flacco to a contract worth $3.5 million. This will make him the highest-paid quarterback on the team this season.

Flacco has appeared in seven games with the Jets over the previous two seasons, throwing for 1,202 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 57.4 percent of his pass attempts. After Flacco signed with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason, New York traded for the Super Bowl 43 MVP midway through last season. Head coach Robert Saleh said that bringing him in would be beneficial for the whole team.
The Jets bringing back Flacco at this stage of his career is a bit perplexing. Even though he is coming in as a backup, he is 37 years old and is far from being a dependable player. Still, the franchise respects the 14-year veteran enough to have him mentor the quarterback they hope will stick around for a while.
New York was just 4-13 last season while Wilson struggled in the 13 games he played in. The Jets will look to have Flacco play a role in developing him so that he can hopefully play at an elite level.
