The New York Jets need more help on offense than defense, but that does not mean they will pass up a good defensive player if they find one available on the open market.
Take linebacker Kwon Alexander, for instance.
Alexander is not expected to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next season, and the Jets are prepared to pounce, with NFL writer Benjamin Allbright reporting that New York is “very interested” in Alexander.
The 24-year-old played in just six games this past season due to a torn ACL, and when he was on the field, he registered 45 tackles, a sack and a couple of forced fumbles.
Alexander, who played his collegiate football at LSU, was originally selected by the Buccaneers in the fourth round (124th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He had a very impressive rookie campaign, recording 93 tackles, three sacks, a pair of interceptions, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and nine passes defended.
Then, the following year, Alexander racked up 145 tackles, three sacks, a pick, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a defensive touchdown and seven passes defended.
The Oxford, Al. native proceeded to make his first Pro Bowl in 2017, finishing with 97 stops, three interceptions, a forced fumble and four passes defended. However, he missed four games due to a hamstring injury.
In spite of his injury issues, Alexander is considered one of the top defensive players on the open market, so he will certainly draw interest from a number of teams.
But, due to the fact that the Jets have $102 million in cap room, New York seems like one of his top potential landing spots.
