New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a shoulder injury when he was slammed to the turf in the first quarter of Thursday night's 37-28 loss to the Denver Broncos. However, Darnold only missed four snaps before returning to the game, and he insists he's “fine.”

Via ESPN's Rich Cimini:

“I've had something similar, so I wasn't too worried,” he said. “Once they told me I could go out there again, I started to get excited.”

Darnold admitted after the game the injury was “painful.” It was diagnosed as a right shoulder sprain.

Jets head coach Adam Gase initially thought the injury was a serious one. Darnold tried to play through it but lasted only one play before briefly leaving the game and heading to the locker room for an examination.

Joe Flacco made his Jets debut with Darnold sidelined for those four snaps, completing two passes for 16 yards.

Sam Darnold finished his evening with 23 completions on 42 attempts for 230 yards. He did rush six times for 84 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown, but he struggled in the red zone in the loss.

Furthermore, Darnold took a beating all night long, getting sacked six times.

The 23-year-old quarterback has struggled to start this season as part of the Jets' woeful 0-4 start. Darnold has completed just 59.4% of his passes for 792 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions. His quarterback rating sits at a putrid 70.7.

New York was certainly hoping for more out of its franchise quarterback in Year 3, but so far he has only gone backward. Sam Darnold will have his next chance to take a step forward against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5.
