The New York Jets went into the preseason notably thin at the cornerback position. Unfortunately, it appears they have suffered what could be a crucial blow. According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, cornerback Trumaine Johnson has been ruled out indefinitely with a hamstring injury:

CB Trumaine Johnson suffered a hamstring injury in practice. He is being evaluated. Gase sounded somewhat concerned.

Johnson's injury raises plenty of concerns regarding the state of the cornerback group going into the 2019 NFL season. The veteran provided much-needed stability to this otherwise inexperienced unit. To make matters worse, the Jets have yet to determine a potential timetable for his return.

New York made quite an investment in Johnson when it signed him to a five-year, $72 million deal. He struggled to provide some bang for their buck while dealing with a quad injury that forced him to miss five games in his debut season with the Jets. Regardless, his absence will be heavily felt in the secondary if he is forced to miss significant time.

Taking Johnson's place for the foreseeable future will be cornerbacks Darryl Roberts, Brian Poole, and rookie Kyron Brown. Given the lack of combined experience, it is safe to assume that general manager Joe Douglas is doing what he can to provide much more depth to this thin unit. For now, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will have his work cut out trying to hide this glaring weakness in the 2019 campaign.
