Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller is set to go up against New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold this Sunday. And as far as the Broncos superstar is concerned, he’s going up against the rookie who should’ve gone No. 1 in this year’s draft.
“I don't know – when it comes to picking players, I don't know,” Miller said per Matt Stypulkoski of NJ.com. “But my feeling, watching the draft last year and the players in it, I thought he was going to be the No. 1 pick. Baker Mayfield was the No. 1 pick and rightfully so, but in my opinion, watching everything, from a pass-rusher's point of view, I just felt like he was the No. 1 pick in the draft. He wasn't the No. 1 pick, but he's definitely playing like it.”
Darnold actually was reportedly the front-runner to be the Cleveland Browns’ pick at No. 1 overall for much of the draft process. But in the week or so leading up to the draft, the tide started to turn significantly toward Baker Mayfield, and that’s eventually who they picked.
Darnold’s loss turned into the Jets’ gain as he fell all the way to them at No. 3 after the Giants also decided to pass on him.
The Browns don't seem to have any regrets about taking Mayfield over Darnold thus far. As for the Jets, they also appear to be happy that they ended up with Darnold as their potential franchise quarterback.
Miller certainly believes Darnold will eventually grow into that role. But while the Broncos pass rusher is full of praise for Darnold, the rookie better not expect Miller to take it easy on him come Sunday.
