Mike McCarthy has had a crazy 2018 NFL season. He was fired by the Green Bay Packers after an embarrassing loss to the Arizona Cardinals and was then rumored to be a candidate for quite a few vacant head coaching jobs. When everything was said and done, the only job McCarthy was interested in was with the New York Jets.

He had been mentioned as a candidate for the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns, but he never had any serious interest in them. Now, it appears that he is not going to coach next season.

According to a report from Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, McCarthy will sit out the 2019 season and will focus on being prepared for 2020. His wife and kids were reportedly very happy to hear the news.

New York decided to hire Adam Gase for their head coaching opening. It was a move that surprised quite a few people, who were expecting McCarthy to get the offer. Regardless, McCarthy could use a year off anyway and will be a top-notch coaching candidate next offseason as well.

During his career in Green Bay, McCarthy led the Packers to a 125-77 record and also a Super Bowl win. He had a rough stint over the last two years and it was time for a change.

Matt LaFleur has been named the new head coach in Green Bay and is expected to get the Packers back into playoff contention quickly.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what jobs are available next offseason. He is going to be in high demand for whatever openings there happen to be and it shouldn't be too long before Mike McCarthy is back on an NFL sideline.
