This year's NFL Draft class has a lot of promising quarterbacks that are ready to make their names known in the league. Now, North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell will get his chance. The Washington Commanders selected him 144th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Regardless of what team swept him up, Howell is destined to have a bright future in the NFL. Despite the Tar Heels going 5-6, Howell had an extremely productive season. He recorded 217 completions for 3,056 yards and 24 touchdowns.
However, his personal run game is arguably even more impressive than his passing game. Howell rushed 183 times for 828 total yards and 11 touchdowns. Not to mention, his longest run was a 62-yard touchdown against the Georgia State Panthers back in September.

According to his NFL prospect profile, the 6'1″, 218-pound quarterback has a lot of immeasurable assets. His confidence rubs off on his teammates, which is a huge intangible that will greatly benefit the Commanders. Howell is also agile when dealing with foot traffic and can get out of sticky situations. He's able to work through the pocket while simultaneously keeping an eye on his offensive targets and is known as an “adequate decision-maker reading combo routes.”
He is expected to compete against Taylor Heinicke for the second quarterback spot behind Carson Wentz. However the Commanders decide to utilize Howell in the 2022-2023 season, he is sure to bring a great amount of talent and leadership to the football team.
