Cam Newton still hasn't signed a contract which is a surprise to some, but there might be a good reason for it since no team has been able to really give him a full physical.
Newton has taken a lot of hits throughout his career and dealt with a lot of different injuries. He is also coming off major shoulder surgery, and it's hard to imagine any team is going to sign him without seeing the condition of that shoulder:
“You're certainly not going to sign him sight unseen,” an NFL personnel man said of Newton via Dan Graziano of ESPN. “This is a quarterback who has a shoulder injury, right?”
What made Cam Newton so good was his athletic abilities, and if that is gone or he has lost a step, an NFL team probably won't want to bring him on board:
“Part of what makes Cam, Cam,” said an official with one NFL team that has been in the veteran quarterback market this offseason, “is that he's a freak athlete.”
The other big question is would Newton be willing to take a backup role? He probably wants a starting role, but at this point, that might not be an option. Would he be willing to sign to be someone's backup or is he going to wait it out until there is an injury in hopes that he can take over and be a starter for a team?
Either way, it appears it will still be a while before Newton signs with an NFL team.
