Recently-released Seattle Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril has a new job as a host on a Seattle radio station. But that doesn’t necessarily mean his NFL career is over just yet.
In an appearance on SiriusXM, the veteran pass rusher revealed that a few NFL teams have already contacted him about his availability. However, he still needs medical clearance to ensure he’s safe to play following the neck injury he suffered last season.
If he doesn’t get the green light from the doctor, though, Avril says he’s ready to move on to the next part of his life.

My wife and I, we’ve been talking about it. We talk about it pretty much every other week, just understanding, ‘Hey, if you’re not going to play anymore, what’s next? Start preparing yourself for that.’ And that’s kind of where I’m at right now. I’m OK if I’m not able to play ball. If the doctor tells me, ‘Hey, you should definitely reconsider not playing,’ I’m OK with that at this point of my career.”
Obviously, it’s always unfortunate for any football player to be forced out of the game due to injury. It’s got to be tough for someone to work so hard for so long on his career and not have to ability to go out on his own terms.
On the bright side, though, it seems as though Avril has made peace with the fact that his situation is now out of his hands. Moreover, it looks like he has some sort of plan for what to do during his post-playing career, which is also a very promising sign.
Hopefully, it all works out for him and his career, whether it's on the field or in a broadcast booth.
