As news continues to come out about Dez Bryant and his future in the NFL, it appears that things will be heating up in the near future. Clutch Points previously noted that Bryant took to his Twitter account to say that he would be signing with a new team “soon,” and there is even more information that has come out about what Bryant has been going through this offseason.
According to a report from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Bryant has been dealing with depression and anxiety this offseason. He is expected to discuss contracts with teams in the next week or two.
“Those close to Bryant say he is in better shape now, working on his mental and physical fitness and working out twice a day with a personal trainer. One associate of Bryant's believed that he will really be in position to talk seriously with any interested clubs in two weeks, as he continues working with a catching machine at his house, running hills and pushing himself, while also focusing on getting help for his depression and panic attacks.”
Bryant is without question the most talented free agent left on the market. Taking some time off and focusing on getting health both mentally and physically is the right move for Bryant. When he decides to return, there will be an opportunity for him and he will need to make the most of it.
Last season with the Dallas Cowboys, Bryant ended up catching 69 passes for 838 yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers aren't what fans became used to from Bryant a few years back, but they do show that he is not “washed up” like some have called him.
Looking around the NFL, there are quite a few teams that could use some wide receiver help. Bryant will have quite a few teams to talk to when he decides that he is ready to play again.
It will be interesting to see which teams register the most interest in Bryant when he begins discussing contract options.
Expect to hear more about Bryant over the next few weeks. He appears to be close to returning to NFL action and he will be fun to watch no matter where he ends up signing.
