After 11 games with the New England Patriots, troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon has decided to step away from football to address his mental health once again.

The 27-year-old wideout took to Twitter on Thursday morning with the surprising announcement. Gordon will step away for “a bit” which sounds like he could return at some point whether it be the playoffs or the end of the regular season. However, it could also mean he won't be back until next season or beyond.

“I take my mental health very seriously at this point to ensure I remain able to perform at the highest level. I have recently felt like I could have a better grasp on things mentally. With that said, I will be stepping away from the football field for a bit to focus on my mental health. I would like to thank Coach Belichick, Mr. Kraft, as well as countless others within the Patriots organization for their continued support. I want to thank my fans for their support as well as I continue down the path getting back to 100%.”

As for the Patriots, this will be a potentially devastating blow to their chances of being a legitimate Super Bowl title contender in the postseason. New England's offense has struggled even with Gordon in the mix, and now Tom Brady's best downfield threat will be on the shelf which will almost certainly make things that much more difficult for the reigning AFC champions.

In his short time in New England thus far, Gordon racked up 720 yards and three touchdowns on 40 receptions.
