The Washington Redskins opened up their preseason schedule with a 30-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns. They will take on the Cincinnati Bengals during week two.

The first week of the preseason is merely a time to get players on the field and accustomed to the speed of the game. In the nation's capital, it means a little more.

There are position battles all over the field for the Redskins. Their quarterback situation is unknown. The Redskins do not have a strong receiving core. With Trent Williams refusing to return to the Redskins, they will have to find a new left tackle. It has been a busy offseason for Jay Gruden and the Redskins, but that is nothing new.

Last season ended in disappointing fashion for Washington. They held a two-game lead in the NFC East with a 6-3 record through nine games. From there, the wheels started to fall off. Alex Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury, Brandon Scherff suffered a torn pectoral, and many other players found themselves on the I.R.

This is a team that has been bitten by the injury bug over the last two seasons. Heading into 2019, they will need to stay healthy. That begins in the preseason.

these are three players to watch for the Redskins when they take the field on Thursday night.

3. Jimmy Moreland

This is a true underdog story. Jimmy Moreland was selected in the seventh round of April's draft. He attended James Madison and the Redskins decided to take a chance on him.

Moreland is undersized. He is 5'11, 174 pounds. He uses his quickness to his advantage, but it is yet to be seen if he can cover NFL wide receivers. Moreland has impressed in camp. Over the first preseason games, it will be important to see if Moreland can keep up with the pace of play and take down NFL receivers.

This is important in Washington because they need depth at cornerback. The Redskins defense is very young, but extremely strong. They added Landon Collins to play safety, but their secondary remains a question mark because of their corners. At the moment, Josh Norman and Quinton Dunbar are the starting corners.

Moreland will not beat either one of them out, but he could provide much-needed depth during the regular season.

2. Trey Quinn

There are two young receivers on the Redskins that need to be watched. They are Cam Sims and Trey Quinn. Heading into the second preseason game, Quinn is a must-watch player.

He was Mr. Irrelevant in the 2018 NFL Draft. That is the ultimate chip to have on your shoulder. It was a disappointing season in 2018 as he missed most of it with an injury. Quinn did catch his only touchdown pass on Thanksgiving Day against the Dallas Cowboys.

The receivers in Washington are weak. Paul Richardson is an injury waiting to happen and Josh Doctson has been unreliable. Jamison Crowder is now a New York Jet so someone needs to step up. Quinn has one catch for eight yards in the Redskins preseason opener.

He will need to continue to prove that he can remain healthy and contribute on the field.

1. Dwayne Haskins

Dwayne Haskins

Dwayne Haskins will be a must-watch player in all four preseason games. With Smith going down with a potential career-ending leg injury, the Redskins knew that they needed a quarterback. They drafted Haskins out of Ohio State with the 15th pick in April's draft. It is unknown if he will start with Colt McCoy and Case Keenum also on the roster. Gruden will not announce the starter until after the third preseason game.

In his debut, Haskins did not impress. He finished 8-14 for 117 yards and two interceptions. He did not throw a touchdown pass. Many believed that Haskins could have been the best quarterback in this draft despite being the third one taken. The quarterback position is the most important one on the field. When a team selects a quarterback in the first round, it is always must watch.

Haskins will need to improve in his second preseason game if he wants to be considered for the starting role. The Redskins are not expected to be a contender this season, so they might start Haskins just to see what he is made of.

Haskins is expected to be a big piece in the future for the Washington franchise, so he will certainly get playing time.
