New Washington Redskins coach Ron Rivera is expected to target Jack Del Rio as a defensive coordinator, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Del Rio is one of the better defensive minds around the NFL, so it makes sense that Rivera would want to target him to try and improve a defense that has really had struggles. This season, the Redskins' defense gave up 27.2 points per game, which was 27th in the NFL. Their biggest issues were against the run giving up 146.2 yards per game on the ground.

Del Rio has been around the NFL most of his life, first as a player and then as a coach. He was a middle linebacker for five different teams from 1985-1996. He has put on many different coaching caps in the NFL starting as an assistant strength coaching and going all the way up to head coach. He lost his head coaching job with the Oakland Raiders after the 2017 season and hasn't landed a coaching job since.

Rivera is a defense-first coach and there would be a lot of experience if he does hire Del Rio as the defensive coordinator. Playing under Del Rio could be a draw to get some star defensive players in Washington D.C. It's unclear how quickly this could happen, but if Del Rio is interested it's hard to imagine it's going to take long to get a deal done.

The deal with Rivera to sign with the Redskins didn't take long, and he should work quickly to get all of his coaching staff on board.
