The Washington Redskins were dealt a significant blow on Sunday with the loss of Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith to a season-ending broken leg in the 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans.

This has quickly shifted the team's gears to finding more stability at the position that has led to veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez to a deal to be the backup quarterback to Colt McCoy, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Sanchez has been floating around the free agent market over the last several months after he had finished up his lone season with the Chicago Bears as the backup to Mitchell Trubiksy. Prior to that, he has spent time around the league with the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and Philadelphia Eagles. He has continued to find work as a backup quarterback that has continued his NFL career despite not earning a shot at the starting job at any point.

The 32-year-old was once the hopeful young talent that the New York Jets could build around their franchise quarterback, but things had unraveled during his tenure that led to his departure in disappointing fashion. That said, he has been able to stay in the league and serve as more of a mentor to the younger guys in the league at the position. Sanchez also has the capability to step in to provide some sort of stability at the position if necessary.

This could be the case with the Redskins as there is no certainty that McCoy will be able to help navigate the Redskins to the playoffs over the last six games of the season. Washington is currently sitting atop of the NFC East standings that should be tested over the final stretch of the year with much importance on the play under center. If anything, this move to bring Sanchez aboard brings more depth to the position moving forward.
