Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has had an impressive season so far this year, but there are still some questions about his shoulder. He had shoulder surgery in March of 2017 and since that point, he hasn't been practicing in the middle of the week.
He also asked to not throw a hail mary last week in hopes of not suffering a setback. Newton was asked about his shoulder during a media session and he claimed his shoulder is feeling great.
“Feels great,” Newton said bluntly, via Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer.
Even if Newton says he feels great it's clear if nothing else the team is trying to be very careful with him. They are limiting his practices this year a lot like they did after the shoulder surgery. Even with Newton sitting out a lot of practice he says he still wants to be out there any chance he can get.
“I still want to be out there every single moment,” he said, adding that he refers to his new practice routine as “working smarter, not harder.”
Ron Rivera also likes to see how Newton is still engaged in practice, even if he's not on the field.
“When you see certain drills that are done, you can see him going through it in his mind,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “You can actually see, [if a play] calls for a certain type of footwork, he’ll stand back there and practice the footwork. You do see him doing those things . . .
“He’s at that point where he probably doesn’t need to throw 105 balls a day.
