The debate prior to the NFL season was that whether the New England Patriots could go undefeated in the 2017 campaign. But any talk about that was squashed flat right on kickoff day when the Patriots were handed an upset loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tom Brady and the Patriots value perfection. They’re used to it, so when they lost another game last Sunday to the Carolina Panthers, Brady understandably isn’t happy how things have turned for the team through the first four weeks of the season. In an interview on WEEI’s Kirk and Callahan Show on Monday, the five-time Super Bowl champion quarterback said that the team is “disappointed.”

New England’s woes, however, should be pinned more to its defense than on anything else. Brady was out of sync against Kansas City but has rebounded well to become the league’s leader in touchdowns and passing yards with 10 and 1,399, respectively.

The Patriots’ stop unit, meanwhile, rank worst in both in scoring defense and total defense. In the loss to the Panthers, New England gave up 444 total yards. Brady knows their defense is the biggest problem of the team right now.

“Hopefully we can figure out how to play more consistently over the course of an entire game. Offensively, we have to be able to score more points than the other team; no matter what they score, we have to score more. If we score three points, the defense has to hold them to nothing. That’s what being a good team is all about.”

The Patriots play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday on the road, as they try to bounce back and improve their record to above .500 again.
