The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a bit of a blow after reports of quarterback Carson Wentz's back injury surfaced. However, it appears he is still holding out hope for a potential return in the 2018 NFL season.
The Eagles revealed that Wentz is nursing a stress fracture in his back. According to John Clark of NBC Sports, he feels he can play through the pain:
Source tells me Carson Wentz really wants to play thru stress fracture and got another opinion on his back with specialist while Eagles were in LA, but that doctor agreed with Eagles that rest is best right now
Although Wentz is adamant about a potential return, head coach Doug Pederson has left it up to the medical staff.
“We’re going to trust the medical staff”
The update may come as a bit of a surprise. There was speculation that Wentz was set to miss the final stretch of the season for the second year in a row after reports about his back surfaced. However, it appears the injury may not be as dire as some thought. Of course, the question of whether or not Philadelphia would entertain his return remains to be seen.
It would not make much sense for the Eagles to risk further injury to Wentz. They have invested plenty of stock in making him their franchise quarterback. His track record when playing through injuries has not been favorable thus far. Furthermore, quarterback Nick Foles has already proven that he is more than capable of leading this team to a championship. Regardless, it will be interesting to what the Eagles decide to do moving forward.
