Hurts, 21, a 6-foot-1 former Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2019 transferred after winning a national championship with Alabama to Oklahoma in January of last year. He would have a phenomenal year with the Sooners, however, leading the collegiate outlet to a Big 12 championship and an All-Big 12 First Team selection.
The Eagles, controversially, made Hurts the 53rd overall pick in the 2020 draft last April, shocking talking heads and fans alike due to the seeming high-end caliber talent the NFC East club possesses under center already with former second-overall selection Carson Wentz, a one-time Pro Bowler.
While Hurts figures to back up Wentz (who has seen a rash of injuries wreck havoc during his four-year NFL career), he may get more reps in complex schemes designed by Super Bowl champion head coach Doug Pederson.
Article Continues BelowNFL analyst Ron Jaworski defended the Eagles' selection of Hurts back in May, calling the former Sooner too talented to pass up.
“The guy has too much talent to have him sit on the bench,” Jaws says, via TMZ Sports. “You could create that package for him just like Lamar Jackson had when he first came to Baltimore.”
The Eagles also announced signings of everyone in their 2020 draft class, including first-round pick Jalen Reagor, the TCU product selected 21st overall.
Hurts will enter the league with a 68 overall rating in EA Sports tentpole franchise video game Madden 21, good for the fifth-best rookie quarterback.
