The Philadelphia Eagles announced the signing of wide receiver Kamar Aiken and the release of Markus Wheaton today on twitter.

Both Aiken and Wheaton were cut by the Eagles after the preseason this year. While Wheaton battled injuries throughout the entire preseason and did not record a single catch, Aiken played in two preseason games for the Eagles.

Wheaton's career receiving yards sit at 1,559 while Aiken's are listed at 1,672. While the two have comparable career numbers, Aiken has been better in recent years. Wheaton has only totaled 102 receiving yards over the past two seasons, spending time with both the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chicago Bears. Meanwhile, Aiken recorded 133 receiving yards last season alone with the Indianapolis Colts. He even came close to 1,000 receiving yards in the 2015 season when he recorded 75 receptions for 944 yards and five touchdowns with the Baltimore Ravens.

This signing is likely an attempt to assist Nick Foles, who is entering his second week as the starting quarterback for the Eagles. The team's top receiver Alshon Jeffery returned to practice this week, but they are unsure if he will take the field in their Week 2 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Eagles are also still waiting on Mack Hollins to return and help complete their receiving corps.

The Buccaneers' offense looked amazing in their 48-40 upset of the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. Backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick filled in nicely for the suspended Jameis Winston, completing 21-of-28 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns. If they bring this same energy into Week 2, the Eagles will have to be much more productive offensively than they were in their 18-12 victory over the Atlanta Falcons last week.
