Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles missed out on a $1 million bonus in the most narrow of ways after getting injured in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins.
Foles left the game early after suffering a rib injury, but the Eagles were still able to score a 24-0 victory in the nation's capital.
And, with the Chicago Bears earning a win over the Minnesota Vikings, Doug Pederson's team was able to secure a playoff berth to try to defend their Super Bowl title.
However, a lot of the attention after the game was focused around the seriousness of Foles' injury.
But there was another element in play that most people probably didn't know about.
From ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter:
Eagles’ QB Nick Foles has a $1 million incentive if Philadelphia goes to the postseason AND he plays 33 percent of team’s plays. His bruised ribs that prevented him from finishing today’s game now mean he played 32 percent of Eagles’ plays – 1 percent short of $1 million. Ouch.
That's obviously a brutal way to miss out on a nice bonus of that amount, but at least Foles can be happy knowing that his efforts helped Philly get back to the playoffs.
He has played a huge role in the Eagles' ability to win several crucial games down the stretch, which probably shouldn't come as a surprise after leading the franchise to a Super Bowl last season.
The Eagles will now monitor Foles' injury as they prepare for a Wild Card showdown against the Bears next Sunday.
