The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a disappointing 27-20 loss against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night that has given them another setback on their quest to repeat as Super Bowl champions.

The road was made a little more difficult with cornerback Ronald Darby suffering a season-ending torn ACL in the loss, according to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network.

This is a significant blow to the secondary as Darby has proven to be one of their top defensive backs and anchors in the secondary since joining the team. His absence from that group puts a significant hole for them to fill moving forward into the second half of the season. Philadelphia has had one of the better defenses in the league ranking sixth with 20.3 points per game allowed, but have had their issues against the pass being 21st in the NFL in that regard.

The Eagles will have to lean elsewhere with that huge hole in the secondary as had been providing stability play in his spot tallying up 43 tackles with an interception, and 12 pass deflections. This is yet another injury to the list for the Eagles that have been hit hard on both sides of the ball as the season has worn on losing key contributors for significant chunks of the year. Darby's absence could have a major impact on how the defense plays down the stretch of the season as they claw their way back into the playoff picture.

Philadelphia is currently two games back of the division-leading Washington Redskins while the Cowboys currently hold the tiebreaker over them. The next three weeks could go a long way in determining their playoff fate with games against each of their NFC East opponents with the New York Giants next up followed by the Redskins then Dallas. It is all on their shoulders to work past them to keep their postseason hopes alive.
