Following the first Super Bowl win in franchise history, the Philadelphia Eagles have a pending decision to make concerning veteran wide receiver Torrey Smith, who has just finished the first year of his three-year, $15 million deal. There are second and third-year options on the contract that have potentially put him in position to hit the free agent market this offseason.
Since the conclusion of the 2017 NFL season, Smith has stated all along that he has a strong desire to remain with the team, especially after helping the franchise win a Super Bowl. However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is reporting that Smith is anticipating a possible trip to the open market.
Article Continues BelowEagles receiver Torrey Smith has said he hopes to remain with the team for 2018. But Smith and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, are bracing for the possibility of the Eagles choosing not to continue the relationship.
In his first campaign with the Eagles, Smith stepped in as a reliable asset in the passing game posting 36 receptions on 69 targets for 430 receiving yards and two touchdowns in his debut year in Philly. He was a particularly major part of the Eagles’ run to the Super Bowl recording in 13 catches on 21 targets for 157 receiving yards and a touchdown in three playoff games.
The 29-year-old continued to prove to be an effective part of the offense with his big-play ability as he made six catches for 20 o or more yards along with two 40-yard receptions. Although the Eagles have a plethora of talented pass catchers, Smith is a valued commodity to the passing game given his experience and speed.
The question that remains is whether Philadelphia believes his $5 million price tag for 2018 is worth paying to keep him aboard. If not, the team could look to go through the draft to add talent at the position that shares some similar ability that Smith possesses. The Eagles have until March 14 to make a decision before his contract becomes guaranteed for next season.
