Change is the only constant in the NFL offseason as teams prepare to move on from some players, get ready to go after others, and change coaches. The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be making a few changes this year. But the most important one has nothing to do with a coach or particular player.
They are getting rid of those horrid bumblebee throwback uniforms. Team owner Art Rooney II shared the news with fans during a conference call on Wednesday.
“We are going to be wearing a new throwback jersey,” Rooney said, via Adam Bittner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The NFL started the trend a few years back when they started allowing teams to wear throwback uniforms. Some of the styles brought back were an absolute delight. Others, however, were not—like the Steelers bumblebee jerseys from 1934 the team brought back in 2012.
Article Continues BelowThey were highly criticized from the moment the world was introduced to them. A USA Today article referred to the jerseys as “bumbles in a Depression-era chain gang.” They were retired once again after the 2016 season.
The Steelers haven’t made many changes to their uniforms over the years. So, they do not exactly have many options to choose from for throwback uniforms. Their current uniforms have been largely unchanged since the 1960s.
Many are expecting the team to bring back the ‘Batman’ style black and gold jerseys from 1966 and ’67.
So, when it comes to choosing throwback uniforms for next season, they will not have many options to choose from for their next throwbacks. But one thing is for certain—it will not be hard for them to improve upon those dreadful bumblebee jerseys.
