The Pittsburgh Steelers were unable to get the 2018 NFL season started on the right foot following a tie with the Cleveland Browns. To make matters worse, it appears they are well aware of what Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will bring to the table in Week 2.
It is no secret that the Steelers have done their due diligence on a number of young quarterbacks in recent years. According to Bryan DeArdo of 247 Sports, head coach Mike Tomlin revealed that Mahomes was among them:

He can make any throw on the field. He can throw from a variety of positions. He can throw stationary, he can throw on the move. He’s got an awesome repertoire of physical talent. He’s a sharp kid, he just is. He’s mature beyond his years. In conversing with him, I think it’s reflected in the amount of things that they were able to do last week in Week 1. The changes in personnel, the obscure things, the designed quarterback runs, the gadget plays. He managed it all and managed it all very well and managed it all in a road game environment.”
There is certainly plenty of truth to Tomlin's praise. Mahomes was one of the more talented quarterbacks in the 2017 NFL Draft. Although he had largely been overlooked throughout the draft process, Kansas City ultimately selected him with the 10th overall pick. Needless to say, he has certainly fit the billing as a former first-round pick.
While the prospect of them drafting Mahomes was highly unlikely, it is further proof of how desperate this team is to find a successor for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers have invested mid-round picks on quarterbacks for two straight years now. However, there has not been any talk about quarterbacks Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph potentially giving the veteran a run for his money.
Regardless, there is no doubt that Pittsburgh will have its work cut out trying to contain Mahomes. He was nothing short of spectacular in his second career start after throwing for 254 yards and four touchdowns against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1.
