The Pittsburgh Steelers have released their punter, Jordan Berry, and will sign former Kansas City Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Berry had initially made the final 53-man roster after the weekend's cut-downs.
Colquitt reportedly traveled to Pittsburgh on Monday with the expectation that he'd ink a deal with the AFC North club, per Pelissero.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the veteran will sign a one-year contract with the franchise for whom Dustin's father, Craig Colquitt, won two Super Bowls (1978, 1979) and played for from 1978-1984.
The Steelers could save up to $1 million in salary cap space by signing Colquitt and releasing Berry, noted Mark Kaboly of The Athletic.
Colquitt, a third-round pick in 2005, spent 15 seasons punting for Kansas City, and his tenure ended with a Super Bowl victory in February. Colquitt holds the Chiefs franchise record for games played at any position (238), and has the third most punts downed inside the 20 yard line in NFL history.
But, his 44.3 yards per punt averaged in 2020 was his lowest mark since 2006, and he was released by the Chiefs in April—one month before his 38th birthday.
Colquitt will mark the Steelers first new punter since 2014.
Berry's career average of 44.2-yards per punt is above-average and he never missed a game, but his punting was plagued by inconsistency. The Steelers brought in Corliss Waitman to compete with Berry in camp, but ultimately decided on neither player. Waitman was signed to the practice squad on Sunday.
Pittsburgh will kick off their 2020 season in a Monday Night Football matchup against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium.
