Beyond all the high-profile moves that the Los Angeles Rams have made this offseason, one of the pressing matters that remains is star defensive tackle Aaron Donald's contract situation. As a result, Donald is once again staying away from the team until he is able to work out a new extension.

According to Gary Klein of The LA Times, Donald has unsurprisingly decided to not attend team workouts, as he's not expected to be at the mandatory minicamp that begins this week.

This further brings attention to the situation, as there doesn't appear to be any resolution coming in the near future. The Rams remain firm that a new deal will be hammered out with the four-time Pro Bowler, but that hasn't equated to the two sides agreeing upon a new contract that will likely make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league.

Instead, Donald has been training on his own back in Pittsburgh while he sits without a new extension in place. The 27-year-old is in the fifth-year option of his rookie deal that will pay him roughly $6.9 million for the 2018 season, pushing the extension timeline to the forefront.

Donald has done more than his part to earn a lucrative deal behind his stellar play on the field in his first four years in the league. During that span, he has become arguably the best defensive player in the league. He is coming off yet another highly productive campaign where he tied his career high with 11.0 sacks along with a career-best five forced fumbles and 41 total tackles that helped him earn the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

The longer this situation lingers on, the more attention the process with receive. That said, this latest development could finally get things hedging in the right direction toward a new extension being completed.
