All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald's contract situation continues to linger over the Los Angeles Rams as the offseason draws to a close. The front office has made a few other notable moves with new extensions for the likes of wide receiver Brandin Cooks and running back Todd Gurley, which has shifted the focus back to Donald.

A possible August 7th deadline for Aaron Donald to report to training camp and end his holdout appeared to be in play so he could avoid becoming a restricted free agent next year. However, Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network is reporting that date doesn't appear to be relevant to the ongoing situation, meaning the holdout could continue for quite some time (h/t Kevin Patra of NFL.com).

Despite the potential diminished leverage, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that the Aug. 7 date is not considered relevant by those involved, according to sources informed of the situation. Without that deadline to spur action, we could be in for an elongated holdout from the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

The Rams have remained optimistic about the entire matter, but there doesn't appear to be any significant progress toward a new deal for Donald. It has become clear that the team wants to make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league, but he is reportedly looking to secure quarterback money, and quite a bit guaranteed.

Donald has certainly made a strong case to earn a huge payday on his next contract, establishing himself as arguably the best defensive player in the NFL in is first four years earning four Pro Bowl nods, three First-Team All-Pro selections, and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award this past season.

The longer this lingers on between both sides, the more time Donald will be willing to sit out in order to get the deal he wants. The front office is surely working hard to find a solution and lock in their defensive centerpiece for the long haul and a potentially special 2018 season.
